Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers is seeking a Director of Software Engineering, Enterprise Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Operations to join our organization as we advance our Technology landscape. As a member of Enterprise Data & Analytics (ED&A), you’ll be joining a strategic and collaborative team that is passionate about transforming our business and technology capabilities and paving the way for best-in-class technology, data and analytics.

In this highly visible role, you will be a key member of a growing technology leadership team dedicated to driving transformative change through AI in the insurance industry. You will combine people management skills with hands-on technical leadership, acting as a "player/coach" who can mentor a talented team of software engineers while actively contributing to projects as needed. As a subject matter expert in engineering, you will partner with stakeholders and thought leaders across the enterprise to identify and strategically leverage AI opportunities to enhance operational efficiency. You will adhere to engineering standards and best practices for technology products, while ensuring the ethical development and application of AI solutions.

What Will You Do?

  • Lead a team of talented Software Engineers while role modeling Travelers' leadership behaviors.
  • Provide technical leadership, foster a team environment, and provide mentorship and feedback to technical resources.
  • Leverage ultra-modern technologies such as large language models (LLMs), kubernetes, agentic workflows, deep learning models, cloud computing services (AWS), etc. in order to accomplish business goals of modernizing operations workflows.
  • Complete expert engineering tasks for impactful and high-visibility initiatives and demonstrate/advocate for their use.
  • Ensure adherence to best practices and standards for AI and technology products.
  • Align work with business and engineering priorities to realize meaningful impact.
  • Build collaborative relationships with key leaders and peers across the organization (i.e. Team Leaders, CoEs) to ensure the best use of overall resources.
  • Advocate for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence technologies and help leaders and peers around the organization understand where best they can be applied in an ethical and responsible manner.
  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in AI and software engineering.
  • Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities.
  • Develop robust talent pipeline by identifying skill gaps and providing unique opportunities, challenges, and training for each team member to enrich development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • 5 years of related experience; including insurance / financial services industry experience.
  • Demonstrated passion for AI with expertise in machine learning, MLOps, and LLMs.
  • Proven experience implementing current technology trends and techniques (e.g., cloud-based solutions leveraging microservices).
  • Strong commitment to engineering standards and best practices, as well as ethical AI development and application.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining technology concepts across the enterprise at all levels. Documents initiatives clearly, collaborates effectively, extracts core issues from discussions, gives and receives constructive feedback, and ensures inclusive participation.
  • Advanced leadership skills with the ability to take initiative, inspire and motivate others, and influence team members. Proven track record of leading and mentoring high-performing engineering teams.
  • Ability to interpret internal and external business challenges and recommend best practices to improve software development life cycle (SDLC) processes.
  • Advanced delivery skills, including determining software design strategies and methodologies, using automated tests and analysis, ensuring quality and production readiness, and monitoring the health of work efforts and adjacent systems.
  • Demonstrated domain expertise with the ability to develop business partnerships, influence priorities, and identify solutions aligned with business objectives. Keeps abreast of industry trends and shares knowledge with colleagues.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, utilizing data and proofs of concept to find creative solutions to complex problems. Reflects on solutions, measures their impact, and optimizes based on findings. Capable of making decisions with broad implications.

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or its equivalent in work experience.
  • Three years of programming/development experience.
