THE FUTURE IS WHAT WE CREATE WHEN WE TAKE OUR VISIONS TO THE LIMITS.

PHD AT THE BMW GROUP.

Bridging the gap between your doctoral studies and the kind of career challenge you’re looking for isn’t always easy. That’s why our ProMotion PhD programme gives you the opportunity to apply your passion and scientific expertise to very real challenges that could shape the future of mobility. If selected, you’ll have the chance to really develop your own future career path with us through your practice-related thesis, promote your chosen specialty from within – and position yourself to secure the career you’ve always wanted.

We, the BMW Group, offer you an interesting and varied Ph.D. program in Artificial Intelligence focusing on the hardware optimization of End-to-End Autonomous Driving. Typically, Autonomous Driving systems are modularly designed, while using human-interpretable interfaces between the different modules. However, this leads to a loss of information and cascading of errors. In contrast, End-to-End systems, holistically trained, help mitigating this issue. Research on End-to-End models, especially the industrialization of such approaches on edge devices will be your focus of your work.

What awaits you?

  • Research on the deployment and hardware optimization of state-of-the-art Machine Learning methods, particularly End-to-End models, for Autonomous Driving.
  • Hardware-centric design of network topologies to achieve real-time capable systems, using multiple sensor modalities as input, such as cameras and radars.
  • The chance to deploy the models on a specialized SoC for in-vehicle tests, including real-world closed-loop evaluation of your deployments.
  • Working in an experienced team of researchers and Machine Learning engineers at our facilities in Garching and/or Unterschleißheim.

What should you bring along?

  • You have successfully completed a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence, or in a related field.
  • You have a strong background in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Low Level Sensor Fusion. Previous publications in top conferences are a plus.
  • You have very good programming skills in PyTorch / TensorFlow, and you worked with modern programming environment tools such as Docker and Git.
  • Hands-on experience in deploying neural networks (e.g., OpenVino, TensorRT, Qualcomm Neural Processing SDK).
  • Experience in implementation of software for hardware accelerators, such as CUDA and OpenCL is a plus.
  • You can solve problems independently while sharing ideas and working in a team.
  • You have very good English and communication skills. Knowledge of German is a plus.

What do we offer?

  • Comprehensive mentoring & onboarding.
  • Personal & professional development.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Digital offers & mobile working.
  • Attractive remuneration.
  • Apartment offers for students (subject to availability & only Munich).
  • And many other benefits - see bmw.jobs/benefits
